My family and I have spent many years living around Kommetjie, Scarborough, Misty Cliffs and Noordhoek, all picturesque villages just 40 minutes from Cape Town. We spend hours collecting mussels off the rocks, catching crayfish and running the rocky trails in the mountains. The wild south peninsula coastline resonates with us – those hot summers and sea breezes contrasting with stormy north wester winter gales and driving rain. It is this life that inspired OFF THE ROCKS, a wine brand dedicated to the Kommetjie lighthouse in whose shadow our family lived for many years.
It is a wine for those summer beach memories of the turquoise colour of the sea after the south easter subsides; reclining in a striped canvas chair with a glass of Off The Rocks Chenin Blanc; the cries of the oyster catchers guarding their nests; the salty tang of kelp on the drifting tides; searching for driftwood along the beach after the big storms…and so many more fun-filled beach life escapades.
GUN BAY and OFF THE ROCKS wines are sourced mostly from the Breedekloof Valley, where our winemakers nurture white wines that are fruity, zesty, lively, fresh and crisp, and red wines that are bursting with an abundance of berry flavours with a soft, velvety tannin structure for everyday enjoyment. Well-priced award-winning Gilbert & Gaillard Gold Medal wines.
