This Quiet Earth

Literature and books have always been an immense part of my life, and Emily Bronte’s melodramatic, Gothic and wild masterpiece Wuthering Heights holds a special place for me. It was
first published in 1847, and 176 years later it still holds a level of fascination for new readers and followers of the Bronte family of Haworth, Yorkshire. It was voted in a poll as Britain’s favourite love
story of all time, and Ernest Hemingway listed it in his top 20 most important books for any aspiring writer. The final paragraph with its emotional, elegiac ending inspired me to create my premium wine brand.

“I lingered round them, under that benign sky; watched the moths fluttering among the heath and hare-bells; listened to the soft wind breathing through the grass; and wondered how anyone could
ever imagine unquiet slumbers for the sleepers in that quiet earth.”

I preferred This Quiet Earth to give it more dramatic immediacy, less abstract sounding. I wrote the brand story to show how the themes of nature and the elements that were such an integral part of
the novel, and the characters, could resonate with people’s daily lives and also have relevance to the ancient geological beauty and the wild weather patterns of the Cape winelands, and the making of
wine. We include this story with its clues to the label design in every carton of THIS QUIET EARTH.

Local Cape Town artist Sezaria Grusch spent many hours with pencil and charcoal designing the beautiful label, with deckled edge on Cotton White textured paper, selecting Munson typeface for an elegant font that was similar to the typeface used in the first edition of Wuthering Heights. We sealed the cork and neck with red wax to add to the craft, premium look in a lovely layflat carton.

Our first bottling is a gorgeous 4 star Platter Shiraz from the Darling wine region, selected from hand picked bush vines and crafted into an elegant wine that shows cloves and cinnamon on the nose with dark berry flavours and some chocolate and vanilla from integration with French oak.
